Materials of Music

Fall 2020

Professor Genevieve Lee

An introduction to the building blocks of music. No previous musical experience required.

MWF at 10:00-10:50 am Pacific Time.

A hybrid of synchronous classes and asynchronous material will accommodate students from different time zones.

You will learn how to notate the basics of melody, harmony, and rhythm. This will lead to writing your own composition and hearing it performed by music faculty. We will all interact and make music for class.

Questions to ponder:

What do Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and the Imperial March from “The Empire Strikes Back” have in common?

Can music be silence?

Is it possible to go through a day without hearing any music?

Just what is that bell for?
